Board accepts transformational gift, approves Frank Winston name for UT College of Law

The University of Tennessee Board of Trustees voted unanimously during a special electronic meeting to accept a transformational gift from the Bill Gatton Foundation and to name the University of Tennessee, Knoxville’s law school the University of Tennessee Frank Winston College of Law and the current facility the Frank Winston Law Building.
President Randy Boyd described the gift as “transformational,” saying it will support scholarships and programming; trustees noted the gift will fund up to 50 scholarships per year. The president and trustees expressed appreciation for the foundation’s support and for Frank Winston’s long career as an attorney and public servant.
Chairman John Compton called for a motion; trustees recorded unanimous “aye” votes on the naming resolution. The recorded roll call includes John Compton, Brad Box, Charlie Hatcher, DeCosta Jenkins, Shana McKinney, Chris Patterson, Bill Rhodes, Donnie Smith, David Watson, Lang Weisman and Jamie Woodson.
Trustees said they expect the gift to expand scholarship capacity and thanked the Bill Gatton Foundation for its support. The president and trustees did not disclose the private donor amount on the public record during the meeting; board materials provided to trustees listed specific figures, which were not read aloud in open session.
