The Los Angeles City Council voted Dec. 12, 2001, to approve the master plan for the White Point Nature Preserve in San Pedro, backing a plan developed by community volunteers, environmental groups and city staff.
The council heard public comment from residents and volunteers before the vote. Student and resident speaker Brie Beasman Simmons told the council about participating in site cleanup efforts: "You can definitely see the difference we have made." Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy project manager Lauren Desroy described the project as a public-private partnership, saying, "This project has demonstrated how effective partnerships between the community, non profit organizations, and city government can be." Friends of White Point and other local volunteers also urged the council to approve the preserve.
Councilmember Jack Weiss submitted an amending motion (referred to in the meeting as item 10a); Weiss said his motion had been seconded by Councilmember Janice Hahn. The council considered the item as amended and recorded an 11-0 roll-call vote in favor of approval.
Council members praised the work of volunteers, steering-committee members and city staff. Councilmember Janice Hahn told the council the preserve protects one of "the great last open spaces" in the region and congratulated the community for its work. Councilmember Eric Garcetti and others said neighborhood councils could help connect communities with more green spaces.
The motion to approve the project as amended passed on an 11-0 vote. The council recorded the roll-call with the following members voting in favor: Eric Garcetti; Janice Hahn; Nate Holden; Tom LaBonge; Cindy Miscikowski; Nick Pacheco; Janice (Jan) Perry; Ed Reyes; Jack Weiss; Deniz Zine; and Alex Padilla.
The council's action accepts the master plan developed in coordination with the Palos Verdes Peninsula Land Conservancy and the Department of Recreation and Parks; it directs the appropriate departments to proceed under the terms of the approved plan and as required by subsequent project steps.
