Sweet Home SD 55 board adopts Amplify ELA and Discovery Science for K‑5

The Sweet Home School District 55 board voted Monday to adopt Amplify for K-5 English language arts and Discovery Science for K-5 science, following staff presentations that included summaries of teacher feedback and classroom fit. The adoptions passed on motions from board members and were placed on the consent of votes recorded that evening.

District staff told the board the selected programs met the district's stated criteria: standards alignment, differentiated instruction, clear assessment tools and cross-curricular connections. A presenter reading compiled teacher comments said teachers "were excited to teach Discovery Science," praised its hands-on, phenomenon-based lessons and noted a planned integration with Mystery Science. Staff also presented teacher feedback that Amplify (referred to in meeting materials as an "Amplified core knowledge language arts" option) aligns with the district's expectations for a balanced literacy approach and phonics instruction.

Board members asked a few procedural questions about adoption timing and the district's curricular rotation cycle; staff responded that the district was slightly off the statewide rotation and was adopting now to return to the regular cycle. Superintendent Terry Martin and staff emphasized that teachers from several buildings had reviewed the materials and that the selections were driven by classroom teachers' input and pilot feedback.

During the vote the board approved both curriculum adoptions. The meeting record shows motions and seconds for each adoption and that the motions carried. The board also placed related personnel items on the consent agenda (hires and resignations) that passed earlier in the meeting.

The new K-5 curricula will be implemented for the 2024-25 school year, according to staff remarks. Staff said the district plans to support teachers with training and to continue monitoring student progress and assessment data once the programs are in use.

The board meeting packet and staff presentations list Discovery Science with Mystery Science integration for phenomena-based lessons, and the Amplify ELA program as the district's chosen ELA curriculum. The board did not amend either adoption during the meeting; the adoptions are presented as districtwide K-5 choices and will be phased in per the curriculum implementation plan described by staff.
