Supervisor Arroyo read the proclamation into the record, referencing presidential and state recognition of May as AAPI Heritage Month and noting that Asian American and Pacific Islander residents comprise roughly 3.5% of Humboldt County’s population. HOPI described recent activities — including an Obon festival in Arcata, a Eureka Chinatown Street Festival, taiko performances and outreach in local schools — and outlined plans for a permanent memorial to recognize the historic Eureka Chinatown and the county’s Chinese and Asian-American history.
Presenters said the proposed memorial site is near First Avenue and E Street, overlooking the old wharf area, and that fundraising for the project was nearing its goal. HOPI also showed banners and educational materials documenting local history, including Chinese expulsion from Eureka in the late 19th century and Japanese‑American internment.
Board members thanked the group for the presentation and approved the proclamation by a 5-0 vote. The proclamation designates May as AAPI Heritage Month in Humboldt County and calls on residents to recognize the contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islander community members.
