Board introduces Michael Surratt as Waterford’s new director of safety and security

Interim Superintendent Eldridge introduced Michael Surratt as the Waterford School District’s new director of safety and security, replacing Jim Beaver, who will retire at the end of the school year.
Eldridge said the board and hiring team selected Surratt after an interview process and praised his collaborative approach. Eldridge noted Surratt has “a wealth of experience and knowledge,” most recently serving as a special agent with U.S. Customs and Border Protection since February 2008 and earlier as a Secret Service special agent.
At the podium, Surratt thanked the board and district administration, introduced his consulting firm Secure Environment Consultants and said he appreciated the mentorship provided by Jim Beaver during the transition. Board members and trustees welcomed Surratt and expressed sadness that Beaver is leaving after a long tenure.
Why it matters: The director of safety and security oversees district safety protocols, emergency planning and coordination with law enforcement. A leadership transition in that role is a substantive personnel change for district operations.
