A representative from Honeywell told the Haddonfield School District Board of Education that the district’s energy savings investment program (ESIP) is progressing, with about 40% of lighting retrofits complete and mechanical and controls work in design to be staged so it does not disrupt classroom cooling.
The presenter (identified in the meeting as the Honeywell representative) said lighting work has proceeded in several schools and that crews have moved among buildings to keep progress steady; some fixtures are full replacements where retrofits were not feasible. “If it was a hundred watts before, it’s 33 watts now,” the presenter said, describing typical energy savings in retrofits.
Mechanical work — including a chiller overhaul, new pumps and motors, retro‑commissioning, and placement of a cooling tower — is in design. The team said the chiller at the high school was repaired this year with a component that will get the district through summer, and a full rebuild/refurbishment is scheduled for fall to extend the unit’s life by an estimated 10–15 years.
The ESIP will also upgrade the building management system (controls) and perform retro‑commissioning for HVAC controls. The presenter said wiring and new controls equipment will be installed at Tatum in the near term and that the controls work will be staged to avoid the cooling season.
A building‑envelope program (air sealing, weather stripping, and window/door improvements) has begun and was described as a percent‑complete item. The ESIP also includes a combined heat and power (CHP) system planned for the high school: the CHP will use gas to generate on‑site electricity and capture waste heat for hot‑water heating, reducing utility costs for both electricity and water heating.
Honeywell said it has resubmitted utility rebate paperwork to PSE&G after a delay in the utility’s new program paperwork; the presenter expects a larger rebate than initially projected but said final confirmation is pending utility approval.
Board members asked about timing and contingencies. The presenter reiterated that major mechanical work will wait until after the cooling season to avoid disruptions and that a chiller rebuild will be scheduled for fall. The presenter also noted weekly progress reports will be shared with district project managers and operations staff to coordinate around school activities.
