Arts Commission approves minutes, abates mayoral-fund item and declines damaged donation

The Las Vegas Arts Commission on Thursday approved its April meeting minutes, voted to abate a Mayor's Fund presentation until the fund's representative can attend, declined to accept a damaged artwork offered by artist Rishon Gordon and struck a separate rescinded donation from the agenda.

A motion to approve the final minutes of the regular meeting of April 17, 2025 was moved by Commissioner Beals and seconded by Paul Emely; the commission voted in favor and the motion passed.

The commission then advanced an abeyance for a Mayor's Fund presentation by Sally Dopler after staff said she was unable to attend. Commissioner Bills moved to abate the item; the motion passed after affirmative votes.

On a donation of artwork by Rishon Gordon, staff recommended against accessioning the piece. Holly Lay said the work "was pierced in shipment, and also we really do not have a space for it yet," and staff recommended not accepting it. A motion to not accept the piece was made and seconded; the motion passed.

Separately, Mary Sabo reported that artist Denise Duarte rescinded a previously offered donation because of timeline issues related to moving and selling work. That item was removed from the agenda after a motion from Commissioner Beals, seconded by Commissioner Cheah, and a subsequent vote to strike the item passed.

Commissioner Portnoy asked whether donated works could be auctioned to raise funds for the Arts Commission. Laura Machado cautioned that the question "has not been discussed" and that staff would likely need to consult the city attorney's office regarding selling assets. Machado said staff would ask city administration about the legal and procedural steps required to pursue a sale or auction if the commission wished to explore that option.

No public comments were offered during the meeting and the session adjourned after the scheduled items.
