Danvers HRIC finalizes Pride kickoff, main event, resource fair and privacy plan

The Danvers Human Rights and Inclusion Committee on an evening meeting reviewed final plans for this year’s Pride kickoff and main celebration, confirmed a guest of honor and discussed privacy and photography guidance for attendees.

Lieutenant Rob Sullivan, Danvers Police Department, who led the committee’s event planning updates, said the committee and partners "have done a ton of work" preparing two Pride events: a kickoff at the police station at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, June 5, and the main Pride event at Town Hall the following Saturday beginning at noon.

The committee described the June 5 kickoff as a smaller gathering with a flag raising, pizza, music and community activities, and said the Town Hall event will include a Pride walk, a guest of honor and vendor/resource tables. "David Mills will be our guest of honor for the evening," Sullivan said, and committee members said the town manager and elected officials were invited and expected to attend.

Why it matters: the HRIC framed the events not only as celebrations but as opportunities to connect attendees with locally available health, legal and behavioral-health resources and to increase visibility for smaller providers that serve LGBTQ+ residents.

Details and programming: the committee said drag performer and community figure Grama Wigfall will deliver a keynote-style presentation at the gazebo and then host a drag story hour at 2:00 p.m. The event will include a community art collage developed with police participation, raffle drawings every 15–20 minutes, and free food from the Buddy Your Biscuits food truck for the first 100 attendees. Committee members said Buddy Your Biscuits contributed an extra 25 meals beyond the HRIC budgeted amount to reach 100 free meals.

Resource and vendor participation: HRIC members listed confirmed tables and partners including HealthQ (a local LGBTQ+–focused health provider), Mass Behavioral Health, Northeast Arc, Northeast Legal Aid (which provided brochures), Copperdog, Paper Asylum, Rivers to Roads Tattoo, Soulfully Nourishing, Elephant in the Room, Kim Gregory’s Pure Pastry and HRIC’s own information table. Organizers said the resource table will include brochures on legal name changes, discrimination protections and other services provided by Northeast Legal Aid.

Privacy and photography: several committee members and organizers discussed concerns about photography at a community event where some attendees may not be publicly out. Committee members proposed signage and a discreet marker (for example, at the HRIC table) to indicate attendees who prefer not to be photographed; members also suggested relying on crowd shots from a distance or blurred images when documenting the event. "If people that are okay with it, that would be like so maybe if we did have someone taking pictures as long as we have someone's permission and we weren't making people uncomfortable, that would be a great way to get the message out," Lieutenant Sullivan said.

Logistics and marketing: the HRIC reported a banner design was finalized and sent to press, and volunteers were coordinating flyer distribution and notifying local media and DCAT so the events will be listed on community calendars.

Context and sponsors: committee members thanked event donors and local businesses that supported planning and fundraising. The HRIC also noted that some raffle proceeds typically support Danvers High School Prism, the high school's LGBTQ+ student group.

Organizers said additional vendors and artists were still being confirmed and asked volunteers to watch for final flyer approvals in the coming days.
