Area Council on Aging and senior centers urge continued county support after expanded services

Representatives of the Area Council on Aging and several local senior centers presented a funding request and report to Riley County commissioners on May 15, thanking the county for prior support and urging continued funding.

The council’s president said the commission’s full funding last year allowed centers to reduce meal prices (for example, Randolph lowered its per‑meal cost from $10 to $5), which increased attendance and demand. The council argued county funds support essential local services — congregate meals, Meals on Wheels, transportation, volunteer programs and in‑home assistance — and said these programs provide social connections and care for older residents.

Several specifics mentioned in the presentation: • Reduced meal charges led to higher participation; higher participation increases operating costs for centers that prepare meals on site (Randolph and Leonardville cited increased demand). • Ogden and Zingdale do not prepare meals on site and often use dining‑out options; the council asked the county to cover the difference so seniors pay $5 per meal and the council covers the balance (excluding tips). • The council emphasized volunteers and RSV‑type programs that provide transportation, home‑based services, and other supports that keep seniors connected and reduce social isolation.

Council leaders asked commissioners to continue county funding at or above current levels to sustain the increased participation and the expanded services. Commissioners acknowledged the request, asked clarifying questions about frequency of meals at different centers, and said they would consider the funding request during the county budget process.
