High school students urge council to add splash pad and redesign pool slide for safety

Two students addressed the Mobridge City Council during the public forum on May 14, urging the council to consider installing a splash pad and modifying the public pool's slide exit.
Kennedy Webb, identified as a high school senior, said a pool slide turnaround that exits into the main pool can create a hazardous current and suggested that a separate turnaround or splash pad exit would be safer for children. "I've heard from people who work there ... kids get like sucked into that current," Webb said.
Jabin Liholsey, also identified with the high school, told the council a splash pad would be a beneficial, low-barrier recreation option for younger children and a feature that could attract more families.
Council members thanked the students for participating and noted the pool and potential splash pad had been discussed previously in work sessions and events planning. No formal action or funding decision was made at the May 14 meeting; council members directed staff and event planners to continue including the pool and splash-pad concepts in ongoing parks and recreation planning.
