The Lake County School Board voted Dec. 9 to approve purchasing landscaping equipment using a Spark grant to support the district’s agriculture and landscaping Career and Technical Education (CTE) program.
Jamie (CTE coordinator) explained the grant is a reimbursement program and that the district could purchase equipment through a cooperative source without a separate bid. The package includes two mowers, two blowers, two string trimmers (weed eaters) and one trailer; Jamie described the total sales price as $19,330 (plus additional items referenced) and a combined package total of roughly $32,508 referenced in the discussion. Board members said the equipment would let students train on industry-standard commercial equipment for work-based and project-based learning across the district’s grounds.
The motion was made by Vivian and seconded by Diane. The board approved the purchase by roll call.
Why it matters: Board members said the equipment will provide hands-on training for students in agriculture and landscaping, giving them experience with tools they would use in local industry and supporting workforce pathways.
Details: Jamie said the program has about 23 acres of turf and two football fields that provide real-world training opportunities. The equipment purchase is the final allocation from the three-year Spark grant cycle and must be purchased by December to meet grant timelines, Jamie said.
Next steps: Staff will complete the purchase and deploy the equipment to the CTE program for student instruction and work-based learning.
