The Mobridge City Council voted to replace aging streetlight fixtures on Grand Avenue and Fourth Street with LED fixtures at an estimated cost of $50,740, council members said at the May 14 meeting.
Council members and staff debated whether to spend roughly $10,000 to repair existing fixtures now or to fund the full LED conversion. A city staff member told the council the repair estimate would cover replacing the current fixtures but that replacing them with LEDs would yield enough energy savings to pay for the conversion in about seven years.
Council President Randy Carlson moved to approve the LED conversion; the motion was seconded and carried on a roll call vote.
The council acknowledged the conversion was not budgeted for 2025 and that the city may need to supplement the street budget later this year. Staff said the $50,740 figure came from an electrical contractor quote and that the $10,000 alternative reflected repair costs for fixtures currently out of service. The staff presentation identified approximately eight fixtures out on Grand and four to five on Fourth as the immediate repair need.
No amendments or further conditions were placed on the contract approval. Council members said they favored standardizing public lighting on LEDs rather than repeatedly repairing older fixtures.
The council directed staff to proceed with the conversion and to return any contract documents or financing specifics for the city file.
