Ashland County's grant writer told the committee she had recent wins and local capacity-building successes: a $50,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) planning award to help pay for the county's comprehensive-plan process, a $375,000 renewal of a Spark "Brighter Futures" grant that ranked first in the state, and several smaller grants won by local nonprofits the grant writer helped coach.
"We did get the CDBG planning grant in the full amount of $50,000 to go towards massively defraying the cost that will go to NW RPC to help us create that comp plan," she said, adding the Spark renewal was ranked first and received full funding despite an expectation of reduced awards.
She also described training work with a small nonprofit, the Laurie Jean Zack Center in Glidden, noting that staff there are now independently pursuing additional grants after receiving technical help and that the center won its first equipment grant following that assistance.
The grant writer said federal grant opportunities are slowly returning to the marketplace and that she is watching COPS and USDA regional food-systems grant announcements; she advised the committee she would provide updates as opportunities that fit county capacities arise.
Ending: committee members said monthly or as-needed updates were appropriate and asked the grant writer to send short written updates for meeting packets when there is material progress.
