The Lake County Schools Board approved amendments to the district's 2024 general-purpose budget to correct accounting-entry and spreadsheet formula errors and reviewed the district's consolidated federal budget.
District staff explained that while paper totals were consistent, data entered into the accounting software did not properly use formulas, producing line-item mismatches. "When Michelle got ready to put them into the computer system ... she realized what happened," a staff member said, explaining the amendments were to reconcile entries before state and comptroller review.
Board members voted to approve the amendments for the general-purpose fund for fiscal 2024. The vote was recorded by voice as "motion carried." Later in the meeting staff reviewed the consolidated federal budget (Title I, Title II, IDEA, preschool, and related federal programs), noting that federal grants are heavily monitored and that program budgets must be spent according to federal rules and approved uses. Staff said some prior years' overpayments are being reconciled and that the district will need to account for those corrections over the next several years.
No specific dollar amounts were read aloud during the discussion; staff said the detailed line-item corrections will be completed in the accounting system and returned for audit and oversight.
