Board approves student handbooks; principals to refine bus-discipline matrix

The Lake County Schools Board of Education voted to approve the district's school student handbooks, while asking administrators to refine and return a revised bus-discipline matrix before the start of the school year.
During discussion, building leaders described differences in discipline approaches across grade levels. At the high school, officials described a three-strike phone sequence: first-offense confiscation returned at the end of class, second-offense turned in to the office for parent pickup at 3 p.m., and third-offense requiring a parent to retrieve the device and possible further restrictions for the remainder of the nine-week grading period. Middle-school principals said they have used morning turn-in systems and classroom collection to avoid bathroom recordings and other incidents.
Board members and principals expressed concern about habitual behavior on school buses. One administrator described a proposed bus-discipline schedule that would impose a three-day suspension for a first offense and escalate to permanent loss of bus privileges by a fourth offense. "If there's a first offense, you get an automatic 3 day suspension from the bus. And the fourth offense is a permanent loss of bus privileges," said Brianna, who presented proposed bus discipline language.
Board members agreed the handbook approvals should not delay targeted bus-policy updates. They approved the handbooks with the understanding that the transportation/bus discipline matrix would be returned for action at the next meeting so new rules can be in place early in the school year. The motion to approve the handbooks passed by voice vote.
