Council reviews library appointments, renovation change order and purchase of two AWE learning computers

City staff described the library-related items on the consent calendar at the May 12 work session, telling councilors that North Bend Public Library is part of the Coos County Library Service District and that the county commissioners govern the library taxing district. The staff briefing said North Bend has two representatives on the county advisory Coos Library Board (one inside city limits and one outside).
The consent items include a reappointment to the planning commission (staff said there was one application), an appointment to the Coos County Library Board, a proof-of-additional-services agreement (a change order) for library renovation, and authorization to purchase two AWE learning computers for the library’s children’s room.
A library staff member described the AWE machines as touchscreen computers preloaded with educational games for preschool through age 12, noting the newer models include enhanced features for English-language learners and come with headphones and vendor support. "They're super popular, and it's a great, ready made solution for us," the library staff member said. The staff presentation also referenced increased foot traffic in the library since reopening and reported more patrons using the building to read and study.
The council did not take formal votes on those consent items during the work session; staff said any council member who wished to pull an item from consent for individual discussion could do so at the upcoming council meeting.
