Middle school building on schedule and under budget; ribbon‑cutting set for Aug. 25

The Middle School Building Committee (MSBC) reported on May 14 that the new middle school remains on schedule and under budget and that the committee voted against a costly study and installation of roof screening that would have added materially to project cost.
MSBC members said the roof‑screen option would have required further architect study at an estimated $128,000 just for the design/pricing work and likely would have pushed total costs much higher; the committee voted not to pursue the screens. The project otherwise remains on budget, MSBC members said.
The committee shared visuals of planned exterior features: a covered outdoor learning amphitheater, patios and a half‑court/flexible play area adjacent to the fifth/sixth grade commons. MSBC members said the district will price those outdoor‑space items and decide after the main construction completes whether to fund them as add‑ons.
A gym‑floor issue caused by moisture during subwork was identified and MSBC said the contractor will address the damaged section to ensure a new acceptable floor is installed prior to occupancy. MSBC announced a ribbon‑cutting ceremony on Aug. 25 at 1 p.m.; tours and additional events will follow the ceremony.
MSBC said further decisions about other field projects (for example, possible future turf fields) will be made only after the final project accounting is complete and surplus funds, if any, are identified.
The committee said tours of the new building have begun and staff are finalizing move‑in plans ahead of opening.
