El Campo ISD board swears in newly elected trustees, elects officers and fills committee seats

The El Campo Independent School District Board of Trustees administered oaths of office to newly elected trustees and reorganized its officers and committee assignments.

Three newly elected trustees were sworn in at the meeting. After the oath, the board took nominations for officers. Trustees elected James Russell as board president by acclamation; Anthony Dortic was elected vice president; and Susan Nahobitz was elected secretary. Votes for each officer were carried by acclamation with no recorded opposition.

The board also filled vacancies on outside bodies: Susan Nahobitz accepted the district's representative seat on the Northside Education Center board; Clayton Ryan volunteered to serve as the district's representative on the Wharton County Appraisal District board and was approved by the trustees.

Why it matters: Swearing-in and officer elections set the governance and leadership structure for the coming year; appointments to county and regional bodies ensure the district has representation on interlocal and appraisal district matters that affect funding, facilities and partnership programs.

Board members used the reorganization session to review board member ethics, powers and duties and to emphasize that individual trustees act as members of a corporate body and that communications should route through the superintendent except where law requires otherwise.
