Orange Community Education & Recreation renewal wins 81.36%; board praises staff and volunteers

Board members used the superintendent’s report on May 12 to acknowledge the Orange Community Education & Recreation (OCENR) levy renewal, which staff said passed with an 81.36% approval rate.
During superintendent and staff remarks, OCENR staffer Jill and others were thanked for outreach work that board members said produced strong community turnout and an unusually high passage rate for a regular levy. Trustees specifically recognized OCENR’s year-round services and said the result reflects community support for the program; one board member said this was the highest regular-levy passage rate they recalled.
Trustees also spent floor time celebrating student and staff accomplishments: the wind ensemble and symphonic band received top ratings at OMEA, the robotics team won a third consecutive state championship, theater productions and senior nights concluded successfully, and a teacher, Chip Collins, was named by the National Education Association with an MLK Memorial Award in recognition of mentoring programs. The board announced that the May 27 regular meeting will be held in the high-school auditorium to accommodate retiree recognition and attendees, and that a retiree reception will be held in the media center before the meeting.
Ending: Trustees asked staff to continue highlighting OCENR’s programs and said they would recognize students and retirees at the next regular meeting on May 27.
