Public question on county access to former commissioner's devices; officials say devices were not set up by county IT

A member of the public and self-identified representative from Wolfram, Fred Caine, asked commissioners on May 12 whether the county could access a former commissioner’s laptop and phone. County staff said they had not set up the device and did not have the password, and that cell-phone records subject to a right-to-know request had been provided that morning.
Fred Caine said the county had been able to access the phone records and asked about the laptop. A county staff response noted the laptop and phone “were not set up by the county,” adding that ‘‘the county IT does not have the password,” and that the cell-phone right-to-know response had been delivered. Caine also said he had received the cell-phone records that morning.
When asked who set up the devices, a staff answer stated the outside contractor who configured the phone was the county’s IT director at the time; that comment was made during public comment and not followed by formal action.
No action was taken; commissioners said staff would continue to coordinate records and responses as needed.
