Board approves police surplus, opens SUV bids; fire department wins equipment maintenance contract and accepts donation

At Wednesday’s Board of Public Safety meeting the police and fire departments received approval for several departmental requests, including surplus authorization, bid handling and equipment agreements.
Police: Captain John McQuay asked the board to surplus an aluminum prisoner transport cage removed from an older transport vehicle so it could be recycled; the board approved the surplus by motion and voice vote. McQuay also requested permission to open bids for RFP-009-01-2025 for 2021 police SUVs; the board opened the bids at the meeting and later voted to take those bids under advisement for scoring.
Fire: Deputy Chief Kim Garrett asked the board to approve a maintenance contract with Gillis Home Sales and Service to maintain exercise equipment across fire department facilities — roughly 15 locations including the administration building. The board approved the contract. Garrett also asked the board to accept a donation from the Firefighters Foundation of two photoionization detectors (PIDs) intended to test for volatile organic compounds; Garrett estimated the new value for similar equipment at about $6,000 each and the board accepted the donation.
Garrett asked permission to seek bids for a bathroom remodel and plumbing overhaul at Fire Station 15 (South Wyneboot area, just south of Covert). The board approved seeking bids on the Station 15 work.
The board took the police SUV bids under advisement at the meeting and directed staff to score and return with a recommendation at a later date.
