Human Resources and the Employee Recognition Committee (ERC) presented an annual update on employee recognition programs, year-to-year results and new workplace-culture initiatives.
HR Director Chris Coelho introduced Jennifer Jorn, ERC chair, who outlined the committee’s mission to acknowledge city employees for work beyond job descriptions. Jorn said the ERC recognized 330 employees in the prior year and set a self-imposed goal of 350; the committee reached 94% of that goal. She noted May’s ceremony would recognize 35 employees from a current set of 62 nominations. Jorn described award categories — Servant Leadership, Sunshine Award, Ben Shirley award (named for a former sanitation director) and an Innovation award that includes a monetary prize and a multi-step application process.
Kristen (HR) described the new Workplace Culture division ‘Grow With Us’ (Gain appreciation; Resiliency; Opportunities; Work toward a brighter future) and detailed programming including mentorship, resume/interview training, a care team for employees, and inclusivity councils. Councilmembers praised the ceremonies as morale-building and encouraged attendance; staff requested RSVPs for May recognition events. The presentation included steps to modernize plaques, partner with local vendors and streamline nominations via the internal Grid tool.
