The City of Homestead City Council on May 13 approved a resolution (CAR 4587) authorizing the city manager to execute a funding agreement with CareerSource South Florida to bring back a summer youth employment program after a one-year hiatus.
Rick Beasley, executive director of CareerSource South Florida, told the council the organization’s executive board approved a $50,000 match to host the program and that the program will prioritize career-pathway opportunities for youth, especially those who previously received free or reduced-price lunch or temporary assistance. “We—ree gonna serve the hard to serve, but ensure those students have an opportunity to employ,” Beasley said.
Council members emphasized local access and outreach. Councilman Davis and Councilwoman Bailey both said they were pleased the program returned to Homestead; Bailey asked staff to make sure the city website links to CareerSource registration information. Beasley said the program will be limited to City of Homestead residents and that selection will be by random process when necessary.
Vote: The council opened and closed the public hearing with no public comments and approved the resolution. The motion to approve was moved by Councilwoman Bailey and seconded by Councilwoman Avila. Roll-call votes recorded: Davis — yes; Cannonball — yes; Roth — yes; Bailey — yes; Avila — yes; Vice Mayor Fletcher — yes; Mayor Lawson — yes. The motion carried unanimously.
Next steps: The city manager is authorized to expend budgeted funds and to execute the agreement; staff will coordinate posting and outreach so Homestead residents can register.
Why it matters: The agreement restores a locally hosted summer employment pathway for Homestead youth and directs local outreach to residents who may have limited transportation to regional program sites.
