Rules Committee forwards Dan Calamucci nomination for Building Inspection Commission to full Board

May 5, San Francisco — The San Francisco Board of Supervisors Rules Committee voted to approve Mayor's nomination of Dan Calamucci to the Building Inspection Commission and to forward the nomination to the full Board of Supervisors for confirmation.

The Building Inspection Department and its commission oversee permits, inspections and enforcement tied to construction and life-safety standards in the city; committee members said a nominee with industry experience could be useful as the city updates permitting processes and addresses new construction technologies.

Calamucci told the committee he has worked nearly 18 years for the NorCal Carpenters Union, leading strategic campaigns and research. "My work involves construction industry research, policy analysis, development of organizing campaigns," he said. He added he is a Richmond District resident, a lifelong tenant and a public school parent and said he would be "honored to serve."

Three union representatives spoke in support during public comment. Matthew Miller, senior field representative for labor compliance with the NorCal Carpenters Union, said of Calamucci: "He has a moral compass like no one I know." Timothy Reif of Carpenters Local 22 said Calamucci "shows up" and completes tasks in a timely fashion. Joshua Arce of the Northern California Laborers Union said Calamucci's industry knowledge would help ensure that efforts to accelerate permitting do not "short shrift around labor standards."

Chair Supervisor Shamone Walton moved to approve the mayor's nomination and send it to the full board; the committee recorded no objections. The clerk said items acted on at the Rules Committee are expected to appear on the Board of Supervisors agenda of May 13 unless otherwise stated.

The nomination will next proceed to the full Board of Supervisors for confirmation.
