Two members of the public used the session’s public-comment period to urge the Muskegon City Commission to adopt a sanctuary stance protecting LGBTQIA+ people and reproductive health services.
Lauren Sharp told commissioners she had proposed making Muskegon a “sanctuary city for the LGBTQIA+ and women's health,” referencing policies adopted by larger cities as precedents and asking the commission to take local steps to protect gender-affirming care, nonbinary identification, same-sex family services and reproductive rights. Sharp said she understood local authority has limits but urged the commission to act as a catalyst for momentum and to stand with vulnerable residents.
Hannah Hilborn, who said she works at the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, spoke in solidarity with Sharp and said Muskegon’s long history of welcoming migrants and refugees underscores the need to build trust before threats reach the city. Hilborn said she had heard community members express concern that leaders preemptively removed the pride flag at City Hall and that two community members who asked about sanctuary city policies had received little response.
Neither speaker proposed an explicit ordinance or pointed to a specific draft resolution during public comment. Commissioners did not discuss a formal response during the work session; the speakers asked the commission to open dialogue and meet with community organizers to explore options.
