Board discloses closed-session summaries; resident urges broad superintendent search

The Allegany County Board of Education read summaries of two closed sessions the board held earlier in March and heard a public comment in support of a national superintendent search at its April 1 meeting.
Board staff member Mr. Lewallen told the board that the board met in closed session on March 11 to consult legal counsel, discuss a personnel matter and conduct administrative functions; all five board members attended and the vote to go into closed session was unanimous. Topics listed in the March 11 summary included the superintendent search, an ethics-panel appointment, an appeal (Four-two05 C), employee termination, an employee investigation and an anonymous letter to the board regarding an employee. The board also met in closed session on March 18 specifically to discuss a personnel matter, again with a unanimous vote.
During the public-comment portion of the meeting, resident Donnell Keach said he supported a national search for the next superintendent and criticized suggestions that the district should limit its candidate pool to local applicants. Keach said a national search would help the board find the strongest possible candidate to serve the district's students and staff.
The meeting later moved into several items of business, and at the end the board voted unanimously to adjourn the public session and resume an executive session to discuss administrative functions and consult with legal counsel.
