United States Gypsum notifies Sigurd of plan to idle wallboard line; up to 55 jobs affected

Town officials read a federal WARN Act notice from the United States Gypsum Company informing Sigurd that the company will idle a gypsum wallboard production line at its Sigurd facility effective June 16, 2025.
The notice, read to the council, said the closure will “impact no more than 55 employees,” and that the plant currently employs 87 at the site. The company said it provided impacted employees notice on April 17, 2025 and that it will continue paying wages and benefits through the closure date; affected employees will be terminated on or after June 16 with severance benefits. The notice added that some other plant operations outside wallboard production will continue.
Mayor Mary Kelly Alving said the notice cited “increasing manufacturing costs and dropping demand” as contributors to the decision and that the company plans to provide on‑site placement and state unemployment assistance. “We are committed to assisting our employees during this transition,” the notice says, and the town discussed possible local responses to support affected workers.
Ending: Council members acknowledged potential local economic impacts and said they will monitor the situation and coordinate with county and state workforce resources as needed.
