Police chief announces new hire; council hears North Davis Fire ambulance and call statistics

Sunset’s police chief told the City Council on May 6 that a conditional offer to a new officer has been accepted and the officer is expected to begin later this month.
"I made an offer to that individual yesterday. He's accepted. Looks like he's going to start the nineteenth or the twentieth, so it looks like the next council meeting will bring him in for his swearing in," the police chief said during the public-safety portion of the meeting.
Council members also received a brief update from the city’s representative to the North Davis Fire District. Council Member Carlson said the district received a new ambulance that will serve Sunset; the ambulance is based at a station in Clearfield and North Davis Fire handled a total of 42 calls in Sunset during the last month, seven of which were related to traffic accidents.
The police chief also addressed recent media attention about enforcement and citations, noting the department receives many calls alleging lack of enforcement but that most enforcement actions concern no-insurance citations and traffic crashes. "A lot of these things come from not necessarily being generated, it's just the guys actually doing their job," the chief said.
What’s next: the new officer’s start date will be confirmed and an official swearing-in is expected at the following council meeting; the city will continue coordinating with North Davis Fire and monitor incident and response statistics.
