The Bluff Town Council confirmed a public hearing for 5:30 p.m. on Monday, May 12 to solicit public input on Bluff Cemetery and to discuss grant possibilities and whether the town should assume operational oversight.
Staff said cemetery land is held by several entities: Southwest Heritage (where current burials occur), Hole-in-the-Rock Pioneer and a county-owned section. The ownership boundaries have been surveyed and staff said those maps and a copy of the survey would be made available in the town office and reviewed at the public hearing.
Council members said they want a clear public record about whether Bluff should accept oversight and management of the cemetery as a municipal function — including the possibility of taking over a defunct special service district — and stressed the decision would require coordination with San Juan County and other stakeholders. Council members noted prior problems with transparency and recordkeeping by the county-managed entities and said a local oversight arrangement might provide clearer accountability.
The council did not take a final vote; the May 12 hearing was set to gather public comment and for staff to circulate the ownership survey and related grant information.
