MEChA students outline activities and fundraising needs during student reports

Students from Central High School presented a student report on Oct. 7 describing the MEChA (Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlán) club’s membership, activities and fundraising needs.
Naomi Flores, a senior and the club secretary, explained MEChA’s history and objectives and listed officers and advisers. Students described recent turnout — more than 45 attendees at the first meeting — and outlined upcoming events including a Fiesta Latina, a Day of the Dead altar, the Cesar Chavez Conference at Western Oregon University and collaboration with a dance group, Sabor Latino. The club said most supplies and event food are purchased by student leaders and advisers on a volunteer basis and requested help finding funding to expand activities.
Club leaders described usual fundraising plans — concessions, local business fundraisers and hand drives — and said additional funding would allow more events and volunteer opportunities for students.
Discussion/Direction: Board members directed staff to identify possible avenues for club funding, including associate student body funds and after‑school programming options, and to follow up with the club advisers about grants and district processes.
