Plainview Intermediate fifth graders and Hill County Extension staff described the district's Strong Teens Healthy Schools program during the May 15 Plainview ISD board meeting and presented a $3,000 award they earned to improve the school environment.
Dr. Shontay Clausen, County Extension Agent for Family and Community Health, told the board the year-long program promoted civic engagement, positive youth development and cardiovascular-disease prevention. "We equipped fifth grade scholars with the knowledge and skills to increase their physical activity and adopt healthier eating habits," Dr. Clausen said.
Students who participated described program activities and their proposal. Carter Jackson said his "favorite part" was a community-leader bingo during which students met Plainview leaders to learn how to advocate for changes. Josiah Hipolito told the board the student proposal was to add refillable water stations in hallways; "From that, I learned how civic engagement works when students collect data and present solutions," he said. The board and staff accepted a ceremonial presentation of a banner to Principal Alcazar and Coach Cornette.
Staff said the program included an eight-week Walk Across Texas challenge and a staff wellness series; participating faculty and staff collectively lost 39 pounds during the program. Clarifying details: the students' proposal received a $3,000 award for Plainview Intermediate; staff added a family element and staff-wellness programming as program supplements.
