Staff said the application seeks authorization under the York County Zoning Ordinance (section 24.1-306, category 17 number 8) for a regulator station on an approximately 0.2-acre easement within the roughly 83-acre Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center parcel. The easement is on the southeast side of the property along Old Moore Town Road, about 800 feet west of Warner Lane; staff noted detached single-family dwellings in James City County lie across the road. The property is zoned EO (Economic Opportunity) and designated Economic Opportunity in the comprehensive plan.
Staff recommended that, because notice for the special use permit has already been published, the commission open the public hearing and then continue it to the June 11 meeting to allow the applicant more time for community outreach. The commission opened the hearing, heard no public speakers, and voted to continue the hearing to June 11. The motion to continue was made by Mr. Chamberlain and carried by voice/roll call votes from commissioners present: Mr. Titus, Mr. King, Mr. Smith, Mr. Chamberlain and Mr. Wasson. The public hearing remains open and will reconvene on June 11 for further testimony and consideration.
Staff emphasized the applicant intends to propose screening similar to existing regulator stations nearby; staff answered commissioners’ clarifying questions about location and outreach but did not present a recommendation to approve or deny at this meeting. The continuance preserves the published notice while giving the applicant additional time for community engagement.
The commission’s action was procedural (opening the hearing and continuing it); no substantive approval or denial of the special use permit was made at this meeting. The application record will appear again on the June 11 Planning Commission agenda for additional public comment and deliberation.
