UN Secretary-General António Guterres told delegates at a Berlin peacekeeping ministerial that "our blue helmets can mean the difference between life and death," highlighted rising conflicts and financial constraints, and held bilateral meetings with German ministers.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres told attendees at the opening ceremony of the U.N. peacekeeping ministerial in Berlin that peacekeepers remain vital in "trouble spots around the world," saying "our blue helmets can mean the difference between life and death." He warned delegations that the world is facing the highest number of conflicts since the U.N.’s founding and cited severe financial constraints for peacekeeping operations.
U.N. spokespeople said Guterres honoured the more than 4,400 peacekeepers who have died in the line of duty since U.N. peacekeeping began. The secretary-general met on the sidelines with German officials, including the foreign minister and the defense minister, to discuss Germany’s role in peacekeeping. The briefing noted that more than 30 delegations were present for the ministerial.
The secretary-general visited an exhibit on U.N. peacekeeping at Germany’s Ministry of Defense showcasing mine action, women in peacekeeping, renewable energy and United Nations police. The briefing said Guterres would meet the German chancellor the next day and would hold additional press engagements.
Spokespeople said the ministerial provides a forum for member states to discuss operational challenges, resource constraints and contributions to peacekeeping missions around the world.
