Parks staff told the commission Thursday they continue to expand recreation amenities and formalize maintenance and replacement plans for playgrounds, restrooms and shelters.
The parks division said it mows nearly 600 acres of open space, installed two pickleball courts in a former tennis-court location and repaired several playground ADA surfaces. Staff also highlighted the city's long-standing Tree City recognition (Tree City USA for decades and Tree City of the World status) and said tree-planting and landscape maintenance are ongoing.
On cemetery management, staff said a new columbarium will be added and the city is launching cemetery software that will provide a digital map and records. "There'll be a sign with a QR code or something that you can go up there with your cell phone, and then it'll bring up a list," one presenter said; staff added the map will show the walk path to a given location.
Staff said they are reviewing a seasonal full-time maintenance position approved in the 2025 budget and may change the job description to emphasize horticulture experience for downtown floral program needs. Operational challenges include recruiting seasonal and permanent staff, updating restrooms and shelters to ADA compliance, and rising costs for materials and playground surfacing.
No formal policy changes were adopted Thursday. Staff said they will continue planned capital replacements and will bring specific MER (equipment-reserve) requests to future budgets.
