Council approves gabion retaining wall contract for Mueller Park Road slope repair

The Bountiful City Council approved a contract on May 13 to repair a slope failure on Mueller Park Road (1800 South) by constructing a gabion retaining wall.
Staff described a localized slope failure on the north side of 1800 South where the sidewalk and urban gutter have shifted. The engineering team hired a geotechnical firm last fall and developed plans calling for a gabion (wire-caged stone) wall as a cost-effective solution. Staff received 11 bids and recommended accepting the low proposal from Taylor Electric after checking references and prior local work.
Staff said construction will require excavation roughly 10 feet beyond the current sidewalk to build the wall on native ground, that the wall’s total height will be about 9 feet and that the wall will be built to grade with the sidewalk on top. The city said the project will maintain two-way traffic during construction and that funding is available at the start of the new fiscal year.
Council members asked whether lanes would be closed (staff: two-way traffic will be maintained) and about the wall’s length and how its ends will return to natural ground. The motion to award the contract at unit prices included in the staff report passed unanimously.
