A vendor representative for Marshall & Baker told the board the existing curtains are original to the facility, show significant wear and are no longer reliably fire resistant. The replacement curtains will use a synthetic material rated to remain fire resistant for up to 25 years, and the main stage curtain will change color from green to dark gray. The vendor said the district's currently budgeted $50,000 for the project will be applied and the remainder will come from available lease-purchase funds and interest earned on those funds.
Superintendent Dr. Tomlinson and operations staff also reported other capital items discussed for the same funding stream: bids for a high-school parking lot came in much lower than earlier estimates (low bid approximately $455,000), final invoices for architectural work (Newkirk Novak) totaling $89,592, purchase of an aerial lift to reduce future rental costs, and replacement/upgrade of several maintenance vehicles. The lower-than-expected parking-lot bid freed interest/lease funds for additional projects, though administrators said total expenditures would leave the lease-purchase account about $9,300 over current remaining balance, requiring minor adjustments.
Board members asked about warranty terms and were told the new curtains are expected to have a 25-year in-service life for fire-resistance; the synthetic material eliminates the 5- to 10-year re-treatment the old cotton curtains required.
The board approved the capital projects package as presented; the motion to approve the capital projects passed on a recorded vote of 5-0.
