Colleyville council gives staff direction to proceed with refined ‘metal tree’ concept for Northern Gateway entry sign

City staff presented refined design concepts for a sculptural metal-tree element to accompany the Northern Gateway entry panels at the May 13, 2025 work session and the council gave staff direction to proceed with a scaled design.
Staff said they had asked the landscape- and sign-design firm Mesa to provide multiple concepts for a planted/tree motif mounted to the gateway’s paneling. Staff presented four initial concepts that the council judged too large and then two refined, smaller options scaled to the lettering and panels. Staff said they recommended option 2 and showed nighttime renderings that included uplighting/backlighting to maintain visibility after dark.
Staff estimated fabrication and installation of the recommended option at about $35,000. Staff described the proposed element as fabricated from the same metal material and finish used for the gateway letters; it would be attached to the existing panels and include backlighting. A council member asked about long-term appearance and durability, and staff replied the metal would match the existing letters and be fabricated by a local manufacturer.
Council members offered general support for the scaled option. At the close of the presentation a councilor asked for a thumbs-up to proceed; councilors indicated assent and staff said it would move forward to procurement and fabrication planning. No formal contract award or appropriation was voted at the work session; staff will return with final fabrication details and implementation steps.
Next steps: staff said a tree survey will be done on the property and that fabrication specifications and procurement steps would follow. The council’s direction allows staff to finalize design details with the selected fabricator and prepare any procurement paperwork needed for installation.
