Grass Valley commission approves recommending narrow‑gauge trestle site for landmark designation

Bruce Boyd, a member of the Nevada County Landmarks Commission, described stone abutments from a narrow‑gauge railroad trestle near the intersection of Sutton and Idaho‑Maryland Road that were rediscovered during a cleanup organized by the Wolf Creek Alliance.

Boyd said the abutments, which sit where remnants of Olympia Creek meet Wolf Creek, are historically tied to the region’s narrow‑gauge railroad and represent features that could terminate a planned trail along Idaho‑Maryland Road. He urged the commission to adopt the site as a Grass Valley historic landmark and forward it to the county landmarks process.

Commissioner Teresa Poston moved that the Historical Commission recommend moving the site forward as a Nevada County landmark, and Commissioner Diane Albrecht seconded the motion. The commission voted in favor; the record shows the motion passed and will be taken to city council for approval before county consideration.

Commissioners discussed next steps for paperwork, plaque text and which body would transmit the nomination. Boyd and the landmarks commission agreed to prepare wording for a plaque and the staff paperwork required to place the matter on the city council agenda.

The commission’s recommendation will be transmitted to city council and then to the Nevada County Landmarks Commission as part of the county landmarking process.
