The Sharyland Independent School District Board of Trustees declared three unopposed candidates elected to trustee places 5, 6 and 7 and administered the oaths of office to two of them during a special called meeting. The board then voted 6-0 to table reorganization of board officers until the absent trustee can participate.
Board President Maritza Venezia presided over the meeting at which trustees present — Hector Rivera (Trustee, Place 5), Dr. Noel Oliveira (Trustee, Place 6), Megan Sullivan (Trustee), Julio Cerna (Trustee), and Andrew Riddle (Trustee) — and President Venezia announced that David Keith (Trustee, Place 7) was absent. The board read an order declaring Hector Rivera, Dr. Oliveira and David Keith elected after noting that the trustee election originally set for May 3, 2025, had been canceled on Feb. 24, 2025, when the board accepted certification of unopposed candidates.
The order, as read at the meeting, stated that the declarations were "subject to their taking their oaths." Honorable Judge Singletary administered the oath of office to Hector Rivera and to Dr. Noel Oliveira. After being sworn in, Hector Rivera said, "Just thank you. Just like to thank everybody for your continued trust and support, and we will continue working hard to move this district forward." Dr. Oliveira said he was "truly, honestly humbled to be a part of this group."
Following the swearing-in, the board took up agenda item 6(c), reorganization of board officers. Trustee Hector Rivera moved to table the reorganization until the next regular board meeting when David Keith could vote; Julio Cerna seconded. The motion carried by a voice vote recorded as 6-0.
The board also noted, as part of the meeting record, that written notice of the meeting had been posted on the district administrative office bulletin board and had remained posted for at least 72 hours preceding the meeting. No public comments were offered during the public-comment portion of the agenda.
The meeting concluded after a brief recess and an announcement that the workshop portion of the schedule would follow; the board moved to adjourn and recessed for the workshop.
Why it matters: The board's declarations finalize trustee status after the board's earlier cancellation of the election and acceptance of certifications for unopposed candidates. The postponed reorganization means the board will not set officer roles until the absent trustee can participate in the vote.
