School staff reported several STEM and extracurricular achievements and outlined a near-term professional-development rollout in artificial intelligence.
Dr. Omensson (staff) summarized recent student accomplishments: Oasis elementary robotics teams competed in a district event with strong participation; Oasis South won the elementary robotics competition. A middle-school stop-motion animation team won first place in its category and "best in show" among middle schools at the Lee County Student Film and Television Awards; the project included more than 2,100 still images produced by students. Staff also reported an award related to a diabetes-awareness teddy-bear project and that UF Shands joined the program as a hospital partner.
On workforce development, staff described a new micro-credential program in "AI in K-12 teaching and learning" being offered through UF (registration funded by the district's STEM funds). As of the afternoon of the meeting, Collins reported 81 staff and governing-board members had signed up to take a 20-hour micro-credential over the summer; the district will pay the cost from STEM funds and staff said the training covers AI concepts, classroom integration strategies, data-privacy and bias considerations.
Staff also noted the district is drafting an AI guidance document that will outline acceptable use, classroom integration and ethical considerations; principals and the curriculum team will review the draft before it is shared broadly.
Board members expressed support for the AI training and for continued investment in STEM-related extracurriculars, citing the programs as core to the district's educational mission.
