Board renews FleetNet digital-radio service for transit amid positive field report

The Board of Commissioners approved renewal of the FleetNet digital-radio service used by the county—us and transit operation.
Scott Chance, transit program supervisor, described the digital handheld radios used by drivers and dispatch, highlighting improved coverage compared with the county's previous system, GPS tracking, recorded audio playback for dispute resolution and an option to boost vehicle antennas in canyon areas. Chance said the county owns most radios (39 purchased via an earlier grant) and uses approximately 35 in service with four spares.
Staff said the annual network charge equates to roughly $30 month per radio for service and that the radios themselves were purchased earlier; the renewal is an operational expense budgeted in the transit account. Commissioners who had observed the system in use praised its performance.
A motion to renew the contract passed on roll call with unanimous support. Staff said the vendor is Silky Communications and the product is FleetNet; the agreement will continue under the county's transit operations budget.
