Council adopts urgency ordinance to pursue POST certification for Lancaster police

The Lancaster City Council introduced and adopted an urgency ordinance that accepts the training and hiring requirements of the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) and advances the city toward POST certification.
A staff presenter told the council that approving the ordinance would allow Lancaster to become a POST‑recognized agency and make the city eligible for state assistance on training and recruitment for both peace officers and public‑safety dispatchers. “Staff recommends that you approve this ordinance, allowing us to become a POST certified agency,” the presenter said. The presenter said the agency is already in POST’s queue and that, after this ordinance is sent to POST, an inspector will be scheduled to inspect the agency, which the presenter described as the final step toward certification.
Council members asked whether the inspection was the final step and about timing; staff said they would send the ordinance to POST immediately and expected an inspection in a matter of weeks. A motion to introduce and adopt the urgency ordinance (New Business Item 2) was made, seconded and the council approved the ordinance.
The ordinance as presented was described at the meeting as an acceptance of POST recruitment and training requirements; the presenter noted that certification would allow the city to receive state aid related to training and recruitment.
