Douglas County commissioners proclaim Peace Officers Memorial Week and move into executive session on legal matters

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners on May 13, 2025, approved minutes and claims, unanimously adopted a proclamation recognizing May 11–17 as Peace Officers Memorial Week and May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day, and voted to enter executive session for legal advice, pending litigation and union contract negotiations.

Commissioner Friend presented a resolution that recited the 1962 federal designation of May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and honored deputies, police officers, state troopers, corrections officers and federal agents who have died in the line of duty. “This board hereby formally recognizes Peace Officers Memorial Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day and honors the courage, service, and sacrifice of those who have given their lives in the line of duty,” the resolution states as read into the record. Commissioner Friend moved for approval; Commissioner Rogers seconded and the motion passed 6‑0.

Commissioner Borgeson asked about the timing of a related ceremony; a board member said it would be held this Thursday at the OPD headquarters at 11 a.m. The proclamation record does not identify additional sponsors or funding tied to the event.

Later in the meeting the board voted to go into executive session for legal advice, litigation and union contract negotiations. The motion to enter executive session was made by Commissioner Rogers, seconded by Commissioner Friend, and recorded as passing 6‑0. The board announced that the session would be closed and the recording stopped; no substantive matters discussed in executive session were part of the public record.

Prior to the proclamations and executive session the board approved the May 6, 2025 minutes and claims presented through May 13, 2025, and approved the consent agenda items 2A through 2J by unanimous voice vote.
