Committee members reviewed a long list of Ottawa County board and commission seats that will expire this year and discussed timing for posting openings and scheduling committee meetings to manage interviews.
Staff recommended posting vacancies around Aug. 15 and closing applications Sept. 30 to allow interviews in October and November and appointments in December so new terms begin in January. Committee members noted the volume of seats may require earlier planning and recommended staff circulate the list and handle reposts where seats attract insufficient applicants.
Members also discussed the committee’s recurring meeting schedule and whether to continue meeting on the second Tuesday of each month or to attach meetings to full Board of Commissioners meeting days to ease staff workload. Staff said posting and interview timelines typically begin in September and that shifting meeting timing could help spread administrative work.
The committee asked staff to update the vacancies list for the full board and to add a future agenda item on whether to abolish the Compensation Commission; one commissioner said he planned to raise abolishing that commission in a future meeting because of statutory complexity and limited perceived value.
No formal votes were taken on vacancies or schedule; staff and committee members agreed to follow up by email and to provide a proposed posting schedule.
