Student advisory council tells board council input led to career‑focused changes across Haywood County Schools

Speakers said the council — formed after the COVID‑19 pandemic to bring student voice to district planning — has met several times this year with district leaders. Cecilia Morgan, a student council member from Tuscola High School, described concrete changes she attributed to the council: "I know a few — last year a big thing was careers... and so then there's the creation of Miss Solly's position that helps with careers in middle school," Morgan said. She added that the district has worked to connect students earlier with career‑exploration activities and internships.
Presenters said the council’s recommendations also led administrators to review counseling services, attendance strategies and scholarship outreach via district career platforms. Board members and staff described the council as a recurring advisory forum: testimony from students is used to shape grant applications and program changes, presenters said.
District staff thanked the students for candid feedback and noted the council meets multiple times per year; officials said the group’s suggestions have prompted grant applications and position changes to increase career and technical education (CTE) access.
The board honored the council’s seniors and invited student members to continue providing input as the district finalizes next year’s improvement plan.
