Moffat County approves $6,500 contribution to multistate natural-gas infrastructure study

Moffat County commissioners on May 13 approved a $6,500 contribution to a West-wide natural-gas infrastructure study led by the Western States and Tribal Nations Energy Initiative.
Jeff Comstock of the county's Natural Resources Department described the request as funding for a “blueprint” that will identify routes to move natural gas from basins to markets, including potential LNG terminals and transmission infrastructure. Comstock said the county’s contribution would be part of a larger $1.5 million study for which Colorado’s total requested part was $25,000; Mesa, Garfield and Rio Blanco counties had already committed larger sums.
Comstock told the board the study would not obligate the county financially beyond the contribution and framed participation as beneficial to counties on the southern edge of the Piceance Basin, where new permits and exploration activity were noted. A commissioner supporting the motion said contributing would “solidify our stance on fossil fuels” and help position the region to market its resources.
Commissioners voted to approve the $6,500 contribution. No formal opposition was recorded during the public discussion portion of the meeting.
The study is being organized by the Western States and Tribal Nations Energy Initiative and will be publicly available once completed; county staff did not specify a timetable for the study's completion or further county obligations beyond the contribution.
