Brandon Valley School District board approves routine fiscal and personnel items, hears construction updates

Board members approved the agenda, minutes from the April 14 and April 28 meetings, bills and claims totaling $1,716,982 and several consent and personnel items. Mister Lundberg, a staff member who presented the financial reports, said pay vouchers totaled about $115,000 this month and food-service bills were $236,316. He reported advance pay vouchers of $8,615.
The board heard a detailed financial report from Mister Lundberg showing $28,913,000 in cash at the end of April. Lundberg said April receipts included about $4,400,000 and disbursements were just under $6,000,000 for the month. He reported $7,270,000 in the general fund, about $2,900,000 in the capital outlay fund, $17,884 in the special education fund, $278,000 in the bond redemption fund, $76,000 in the enterprise fund and $18,400,000 in the projects fund. Lundberg also summarized investments of roughly $26,163,000, including $7,600,000 in South Dakota FIT and $18,500,000 in certificates of deposit at First National Bank.
Superintendent Larson updated the board on construction. He said work at Berkman Valley Elementary is progressing: exterior foundations are complete, interior foundations are ongoing and structural steel is being installed on the north side near the commons. Larson said site activity for the Brandon Valley Middle School addition has begun and foundation work and relocation of a storage shed on the northwest side are expected to start soon.
Larson reminded the board that the district’s preliminary budget presentation is scheduled for the next board meeting on Tuesday, May 27. He said the district expects the second half of the major tax draw in May and June, which will affect available revenues. Larson noted the final student day is May 22, which will be a two-hour early dismissal, and outlined staff start dates and the first day for students in August.
The board approved consent agenda items 1 and 2, personnel items 1 through 27, and information items 28 through 38 for review. The meeting packet also included building permit applications and thank-you notes to the board. The board acknowledged recent staff recognitions: Roxy Gertes as Brandon Valley Teacher of the Year, Chuck Henson as classified employee of the year and a staff member named Gina who won region teacher of the year and will advance to the state competition.
There were no public comments recorded and no conflicts of interest disclosed. The board adjourned after the business items and noted an upcoming community concert that evening.
