Southfield proclaims May 17, 2025, ‘Kids to Parks Day’

Southfield’s City Council voted May 12 to proclaim Saturday, May 17, 2025, as Kids to Parks Day in the city.
The resolution, presented by Kathleen McNellis of the Parks and Recreation Department, says the national Kids to Parks Day — organized by the National Park Trust and observed the third Saturday in May — “is aimed at getting children outside” and encourages families to visit local parks and public lands. McNellis told the council the Southfield Parks and Recreation Department will host the city’s event from noon to 2 p.m. at the Southfield Municipal Campus with arts and crafts, a DJ, inflatable playscapes and community partners including the Southfield Police Department and Oakland County Parks and Recreation.
“Kids to Parks Day will broaden children’s appreciation for nature and the outdoors,” McNellis said during her remarks. The resolution lists public-health reasons for promoting outdoor activity, including combating childhood obesity and other chronic conditions.
Councilwoman Banks moved to approve the joint resolution; Councilwoman Haynes supported the motion. The council approved the proclamation by voice vote; the motion carried.
The council’s packet and announcements identify the event as free and open to the public with no registration required. The Parks and Recreation department and the council encouraged families to attend and learn about local park stewardship.
