Keizer Heritage Museum seeks funding for two permanent exhibits and operating support

Robert Becker, manager of the Keizer Heritage Museum and president of the Keizer Heritage Foundation board, asked the budget committee on May 20 for tourism-support (TOT) funds and an additional $2,000 for operating expenses.

Becker said the museum is in year two of a reimagining and modernization project that will transform exhibit spaces and improve interpretation. He said the museum is fully staffed for the first time in its history and expects to host interns from McNary High School and the University of Oregon.

Becker requested funds for two permanent exhibits, part of the museums five-year plan, to better tell Keizer-related stories including Native American and pioneer eras, historic floods and the city school. He said the museum aims to use improved exhibit design, collection care and oral histories to enhance educational value and attract statewide attention.

Councilors asked about capital projects and the museum's obligations under its lease agreement. Becker said major deferred-maintenance work supported by ARPA funds (HVAC, ADA doors, windows) is complete and that ongoing capital needs will be managed by the foundation with support from the city where appropriate. He said grant-seeking for future projects is ongoing.

The committee did not make a funding decision at the May 20 session; Becker answered questions and staff will include the request in follow-up budget deliberations.
