Board hears policy committee first readings; facilities committee reports Fifth Street Gym walkthrough complete

Policy committee members said they are awaiting guidance from the Associated School Boards regarding a library materials selection and adoption policy (IIAC) required by recent legislation; the committee notified the board so the district can complete changes by a July 1 effective date tied to the new law. The committee also presented first readings on the wellness policy (AE) developed from federal nutrition program guidelines and on part-time enrollment rules (JF) that were revised to require learners to "earn their respective graduation requirement credits" rather than list a state-specific credit total, a change intended to avoid future edits when state credit requirements change.
The board conducted a second reading and approval on IKFA (early graduation) and reviewed an emergency policy IKFB on graduation ceremony decoration that was read publicly and placed on the consent agenda. The emergency policy language on the record states that a Native American learner may wear an eagle feather or plume at graduation and that a learner enlisted in the South Dakota National Guard or another branch of the armed forces may wear a sash, stole or other military decoration issued by the military, provided the learner informs the administrator overseeing the ceremony.
Facilities committee members reported that Dr. Schultz led a final walkthrough of the Fifth Street Gym and said the district no longer has operational control of the facility (the contractor turnover has occurred). Board members had no additional comments during the facilities update.
Board members were asked to review the first‑reading materials before the next meeting; the wellness and part‑time enrollment items will return for a vote at the next meeting.
